What is ElevenLabs?
ElevenLabs is a company headquartered in the United States. It now sells three separate platforms: ElevenCreative for text to speech, voice cloning, dubbing and studio editing; ElevenAgents for conversational voice agents; and ElevenAPI for developers. This review covers ElevenCreative.
ElevenCreative runs in the browser with an account, and a companion app called ElevenReader is available on iOS. There is no installed desktop version.
Making voiceovers with ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs gives access to more than 11,000 voices across 70+ languages through its Eleven v3 model. Flash v2.5, its lowest-latency model, covers 32 languages, and Multilingual v2 covers 29.
Voice cloning comes in two forms. Instant voice cloning, built from a short sample, is available from the Starter plan. Professional voice cloning, trained from a longer recording for a closer match, opens on the Creator plan.
Delivery can be shaped in detail: emotion and delivery style are controllable, and pronunciation can be fixed with phonetic spelling or a pronunciation dictionary rather than guessed at by the model.
Dubbing Studio translates and re-voices audio into other languages, available from Starter. A separate voice changer lets you swap the voice on an existing recording while keeping its performance. Eleven v3 also supports multi-speaker dialogue, generating natural conversations between several voices in one pass.
Long scripts are organized in Studio, which groups work into projects and chapters, and in Productions. The free plan includes 3 Projects in Studio. Separately, the ElevenReader app reads PDFs, documents, ePubs and articles aloud, which is a different product from the Studio voiceover workflow.
Working with other people
A shared team workspace with multiple seats starts on the Scale plan, which lists 3 workspace seats. Developers can build on the same voice and speech technology through ElevenAPI, priced separately from the ElevenCreative plans covered here. ElevenCreative itself runs on the web, and ElevenReader is available on iOS.
ElevenLabs pricing: what each plan gives
The Free plan costs nothing and gives 10,000 credits a month and 3 Projects in Studio, but carries no commercial license, so its output cannot be used commercially.
Starter costs $6 a month ($5 a month billed yearly) and adds a commercial license, instant voice cloning, Dubbing Studio and 30,000 credits a month. Creator costs $22 a month ($18.33 a month billed yearly) and adds professional voice cloning. Pro costs $99 a month ($82.50 a month billed yearly). Scale costs $299 a month ($249.17 a month billed yearly) and adds the team workspace with 3 seats. Business costs $990 a month ($825 a month billed yearly).
There is no free trial of a paid plan; the ongoing Free plan is the way to try the product before subscribing.
Privacy and support
ElevenLabs may use what you generate and upload to train its models by default, but you can opt out of this in your account's data use settings. It is SOC 2 certified and GDPR compliant, and single sign-on is available for enterprise workspaces. Commercial use of your output requires at least the Starter plan.
Support runs through email and a help center with ticket submission.
Who ElevenLabs suits
ElevenLabs suits people producing voiceovers, dubbed video or long-form audio who want a wide choice of voices and languages, fine control over pronunciation and delivery, and a paid plan that includes commercial rights.
It suits less well anyone who wants to publish commercial work without paying, since the free tier withholds a commercial license, or anyone uncomfortable with their audio training the models by default, since that requires an active opt-out rather than being off from the start.
