Zoho Desk's free plan is the most familiar helpdesk start here: up to three agents, basic ticketing and email support, plus a free Zoho CRM for up to three users.
Best Free AI Customer Service Tools
Find the best free AI customer service tools by what the free plan really covers: seats, conversations, resolutions or visitors. The list is grouped by kind, from helpdesks and chatbot builders to voice agents, so you compare like with like. Each entry names the limit you will meet first and what sits behind it, which matters most to small support teams.

Vapi is the odd one out: there is no permanent free tier, and the 60 or more minutes of calls at sign-up are a one-off, though enough for a real test.

Up to 3 agents, basic ticketing and email support

Zoho Desk's free plan is the most familiar helpdesk start here: up to three agents, basic ticketing and email support, plus a free Zoho CRM for up to three users. AI is the catch, since Zia and live chat arrive on Professional, though a 15-day trial of paid features needs no card. Choose it over Help Scout when you want ticketing now and a full suite around it later.
- Zoho Desk offers mature, full-featured SLA management with configurable routing and escalation logic.
- The platform covers an exceptionally wide surface area with 55+ apps, making it viable as an all-in-one replacement for multiple point solutions.
- Zia AI agent performance depends heavily on training investment, meaning out-of-the-box autonomous agents may underperform without significant configuration effort.

Up to 5 users, 1 Inbox, 1 Docs site, 100 contacts/mo, 10 saved replies, 10 tags

Help Scout's free plan is a human inbox, not a bot: up to five users, one inbox, one Docs site and 100 contacts a month. Autonomous AI is a separate add-on billed per resolution, with a three-month free trial included. Choose it over Zoho when five people share replies and you want a customer-friendly tool, and accept that contacts, not agents, are what runs out.
- The shared inbox is mature and feature-rich, including assignment, tagging, SLAs, snooze, saved replies, and workflow automation that requires no developer involvement.
- AI features are genuinely integrated rather than bolted on, with AI Answers acting as an autonomous agent inside Beacon and inbox AI handling drafting, editing, and translating.
- Help Scout is not designed for enterprise teams or solo operators, leaving those outside the small-to-mid-sized sweet spot underserved.

The free plan starts without a credit card and centers on live chat that the Lyro AI agent can answer, trained from FAQ uploads, a website scraper or imported Zendesk articles. Anything outside that training is passed to a human. The catch is how paid plans count: billable conversations and Lyro conversations are separate meters. Pick it over tawk.to when an AI agent is the point of the chat widget.
- Lyro AI agent performs better than expected, handling repetitive queries like order status, return policies, and FAQs without human intervention.
- Available across web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and Chrome, giving small teams the flexibility to run support on the go.
- Pricing structure is likely to frustrate buyers who don't fit the specific use case Tidio is optimized for.

2 seats, website chat widget, mobile apps, contact form, 100 customer profiles, no AI credits

Two seats, a website chat widget, mobile apps and a contact form for 100 customer profiles make up the free plan, with no AI credits at all. Hugo, its AI, runs on usage credits that begin on Mini, and a pay-as-you-go switch keeps it running when they are spent. Choose Crisp over tawk.to when a pair of people want phone apps and a tidy widget, and AI can wait.
- Flat-fee workspace pricing eliminates per-seat chaos, making costs predictable for growing SMB teams.
- Shared inbox consolidates WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, email, and website chat into a single unified view.
- The chatbot builder and Hugo AI workflow tool are two separate systems, which frequently confuses new users.

Unlimited agents, unlimited chats, full platform including inbox, CRM, pipeline, knowledge base, automations, and feedback, forever free

This one is free for good: unlimited agents and chats, with an inbox, CRM, pipeline, knowledge base and automations included, so a growing team never pays per seat. Chat, email, WhatsApp and SMS land in one place. The catch is that AI and some other features sit behind paid add-ons, and there is no trial because the free plan is the product. Pick it over Zoho when seats matter more than ticket depth.
- The core platform is genuinely free with unlimited agents and full chat history included at no cost.
- tawk.to holds over 20% market share in its category, suggesting strong reliability and widespread adoption since 2013.
- Removing tawk.to branding from the chat widget requires an additional paid add-on, which undermines the fully-free positioning for many businesses.

You get a real agent, but a small one: 50 message credits a month, one member and a limited choice of models. An agent left idle for 14 days is deleted, so keep it in use. That suits a trial on a quiet site. Pick Chatbase over Botpress when you want a no-code agent trained on your content and reachable through web chat and WhatsApp, and expect to pay once volume grows.
- Supports multiple AI models including GPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek, giving users rare flexibility to switch between providers.
- No-code platform makes it accessible to non-technical teams without requiring engineering resources to deploy.
- Founded in 2023, making it a very young company competing against established players like Intercom and Zendesk with over a decade of experience.

Botpress gives 100 conversations with no top-ups or overages, so there is no surprise bill when they are gone. Studio, Desk and the Agent Development Kit are all on the free plan, with no time limit on access. That makes it the builder to pick over Chatbase if you want flows you shape yourself. The catch is that 100 conversations disappear quickly once a site has regular visitors.
- Botpress Studio and Botpress Desk are both included on every plan, including the free tier, which is genuinely unusual in this category.
- The Agent Development Kit (ADK) is available on all plans including free, whereas most platforms gate API access behind paid tiers.
- Custom domain support for knowledge bases is only available on Plus plans and above, limiting free tier users in meaningful ways.

- Supports 37+ content source types including PDFs, Google Drive, Notion, Confluence, YouTube transcriptions, and Zendesk articles, covering an unusually wide range of inputs.
- No coding required to build a functional AI chatbot from existing documentation.
- No native live chat interface or agent inbox, meaning DocsBot only handles the bot layer and teams must manage post-escalation conversations elsewhere.

- Trains on a wide variety of content sources including websites, PDFs, Google Drive, SharePoint, and past support tickets.
- Every chatbot reply cites its sources, giving users transparency and building trust in AI-generated answers.

Its plans count credits, extracted-text characters and team seats. Branding removal, human handover and knowledge gap insights are listed on Pro, so a small team should expect a paid plan before the bot looks like its own. Pick it over Ochatbot for general website help, not shop catalogs.
- No-code setup allows businesses to build GPT-4-powered chatbots without any engineering resources or programming knowledge.
- Supports training on multiple content types including PDFs, URLs, and plain text, making data ingestion flexible.
- Analytics and reporting are weak, with minimal documentation and no notable user enthusiasm around dashboards or conversation insights.
Best free AI voice agents

Vapi is the odd one out: there is no permanent free tier, and the 60 or more minutes of calls at sign-up are a one-off, though enough for a real test. After that you pay by the minute through a developer API, with ten concurrent calls included. Pick it over Bland when you want to bring your own model keys and prove the idea first, and expect to build the agent in code.
- Vapi achieves sub-500ms latency by handling all voice infrastructure between LLM, speech-to-text, and text-to-speech providers.
- The platform supports full LLM provider flexibility, allowing developers to swap between OpenAI, Anthropic, and others without rebuilding infrastructure.
- Vapi requires significant technical fluency to set up and operate, making it inaccessible for most non-developer support teams.

2 credits and an inbound number, no card needed

The Start plan has no platform fee, asks for no card and comes with two credits and an inbound number. Per-minute billing begins straight away, which keeps a first test cheap but makes the free part small. The caps are stated plainly: 10 concurrent calls and 100 calls a day. Choose Bland over Vapi when phone call automation is the whole job and you want those limits and commercial rights spelled out.
- All-inclusive per-minute pricing covers the language model, transcription, and voice synthesis together, no hidden API stacking from third parties.
- Runs entirely on proprietary infrastructure with no OpenAI or ElevenLabs pass-throughs, reducing unexpected costs at invoice time.
- Voice cloning is locked to Enterprise tier and requires a custom voice actor arrangement, limiting access for smaller teams.
How to choose a free AI customer service tool
Free customer service plans count three very different things: people on your team, conversations with customers, and credits for the AI itself. A helpdesk gives away seats and holds back automation, a chatbot builder gives away a small pot of AI credits, and a voice platform gives away a few minutes on a phone line. Below, the tools are grouped by the work they do, each free plan is broken down by what it measures, and the last sections pair them with teams of different sizes.
Start with the job, not the tool
Small support teams and store owners usually need one of five things, and the tools here split along those lines.
- Running a shared inbox. Several people answer the same customers and need tickets, assignment and history. Zoho, Help Scout, Crisp and Tidio are built around the inbox, and tawk.to adds a free one with unlimited agents.
- Answering from your own documents. A bot reads your help pages and replies to common questions. Chatbase, DocsBot, Wonderchat, Chatling and Dante-ai train on your content, and Botpress lets you build an agent with a flow editor.
- Chatting live on a website. A visitor asks a question and a person or bot answers. tawk.to, Crisp and Tidio all put a chat widget on your site.
- Selling and supporting in a store. Order status, abandoned carts and product questions matter most. Ochatbot is built for stores on Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce, and Tidio's Lyro handles order status and return policies.
- Answering the phone. Calls need a voice agent rather than a chat window. Vapi and Bland run phone agents, and both are aimed at developers.
Find your main job in the table to see where to start and what the closest alternative gives up.
| Your main job | Start with | Runner-up and the trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Shared inbox for a team of two or three | Zoho | Crisp gives 2 seats and a chat widget, but no AI credits on free |
| Shared inbox for a team of five | Help Scout | Zoho covers 3 agents with basic ticketing and email support |
| Unlimited agents at no cost | tawk.to | Removing its branding takes a paid add-on |
| Bot trained on your help pages | Chatbase | Chatling gives 100 credits and 2 agents, but no ticket handling |
| Shopify store questions | Ochatbot | Tidio's Lyro agent handles order status and return policies, with a Starter plan at $29 |
| Developer-built support agent | Botpress | Vapi and Bland cover voice, and both bill by the minute |
What you actually get for free
A free plan is worth having when you know what it counts, so here is each kind of tool in plain terms.
- Helpdesks. The free plan limits people more than conversations. Zoho's free plan covers up to 3 agents with basic ticketing and email support. Help Scout's covers up to 5 users, 1 inbox, 1 Docs site and 100 contacts a month, so it suits a team that talks to a few customers a day. Crisp gives 2 seats, a website chat widget, mobile apps and 100 customer profiles. tawk.to has no seat limit and no chat limit, and includes its CRM and knowledge base.
- Chatbot builders. These count AI credits and conversations, and the amounts are small. Chatbase's free plan has 50 message credits a month, 1 member and 1 agent, and deletes the agent after 14 days of inactivity. Chatling gives 100 AI credits a month and 2 agents. DocsBot gives 100 AI credits a month for 1 bot built from 50 source pages. Wonderchat gives 20 credits, about 10 resolutions a month. Botpress gives 100 conversations with no top-ups. Ochatbot counts website visitors instead, up to 1,000 a month and 100 products.
- Voice platforms. Minutes are the meter. Vapi includes 60 or more minutes at sign-up and has no permanent free tier after that. Bland starts at $0.14 a minute with no platform fee and no card.
In a normal week, a free helpdesk handles real work. A free chatbot handles a trial, which is useful for judging answer quality before paying.
Which tool fits which team
- Solo store owners. Start with Ochatbot, which takes 1,000 monthly visitors and includes generative AI, abandoned cart and order status on the free plan. Add tawk.to if you also want to answer customers yourself, since it costs nothing per agent.
- Two or three person teams. Start with Zoho, because 3 agents and basic ticketing fit a small shop, and the 15 day trial lets you try paid features. Crisp is the alternative if you want a chat widget and mobile apps from day one.
- Teams of five who share an inbox. Start with Help Scout, which allows up to 5 users and one shared inbox. Its AI Answers add-on includes a 3 month free trial if you later want a bot to resolve questions.
- Software companies with a help center. Start with DocsBot, which learns from 37 or more content sources including Notion, Confluence and Zendesk articles. Pair it with a helpdesk, because DocsBot has no native live chat or ticketing.
- Messaging-first businesses. Start with Wonderchat, which covers WhatsApp, SMS, voice and Microsoft Teams, or Chatbase for web chat and WhatsApp. Dante-ai also reaches WhatsApp and supports 95 or more languages.
- Teams with a developer. Start with Botpress, where Studio, Desk and the Agent Development Kit come with every plan including free. Vapi and Bland suit calls that need a voice agent.
Where free plans stop
| Limit | Tools | What happens when you hit it |
|---|---|---|
| Seats | Zoho (3 agents), Help Scout (5 users), Crisp (2 seats), Chatbase (1 member) | Another person needs a paid plan |
| AI credits | Chatbase (50), Wonderchat (20), DocsBot (100), Chatling (100) | You wait for the monthly refill or move up a plan |
| Conversations | Botpress (100, no top-ups) | You move to a paid plan for more |
| Contacts and visitors | Help Scout (100 contacts a month), Ochatbot (1,000 visitors) | New contacts or visitors outgrow the free tier |
| Branding | tawk.to, Chatling, DocsBot | Removing it means an add-on or a higher plan |
| Minutes | Vapi (60 or more), Bland (billed per minute) | Calls are billed from then on |
Free limits are manageable when you plan around them. Put the bot on your top three questions first, keep the training content short and current, and watch credit use for a week before you decide whether to pay. For helpdesks, the limit is people, so a team that stays at one or two agents can use a free plan for a long time.
What you give up by staying free
The common loss is automation. Zoho's AI features and live chat sit on higher plans, and its free plan stops at basic ticketing and email. Crisp's free plan has no AI credits, and Mini adds $5 a month of them. tawk.to's autonomous AI capabilities sit behind add-ons, so the free platform is mostly a human tool.
Channels and control matter too. Help Scout includes WhatsApp from Standard upward, and Botpress keeps custom domains for its knowledge bases for Plus and above. Chatling's free plan has limited customization, while CSAT surveys and daily auto-sync arrive on Plus. Chatbase's free plan runs limited models, so test answer quality before you put a bot in front of customers.
Privacy and who sees your conversations
Customer chats contain names, orders and sometimes health or payment details, so how a tool treats that data matters. These tools state that your data is not used for training.
| Tool | What is stated |
|---|---|
| Botpress | Not used for training; SOC 2 listed |
| Chatbase | Not used for training; SOC 2 listed |
| Chatling | Not used for training |
| Crisp | Not used for training |
| Help Scout | Not used for training; SOC 2 listed |
| Ochatbot | Not used for training |
| Wonderchat | Not used for training; SOC 2 listed |
| Zoho | Not used for training; SOC 2 and ISO 27001 listed |
Pick one of these for any shop that handles customer details. Zoho also lists HIPAA, and Chatling and Crisp list GDPR alongside their no-training statements.
Mistakes to avoid
- Counting seats and ignoring volume. Help Scout's 5 users sound generous until you reach 100 contacts a month. Estimate your monthly contacts before you choose.
- Assuming a free bot is unmetered. Chatbase gives 50 message credits and Wonderchat 20 credits, about 10 resolutions. A week of real traffic can use that up, so test with a narrow audience first.
- Picking a bot with nowhere to send escalations. DocsBot has no native ticketing or live chat, and Chatling has no ticket management. Connect a helpdesk such as Zoho or tawk.to before you launch.
- Treating voice as free. Vapi's 60 minutes are for testing, and Bland bills from the first call. A 10 hour month is about $30 at Vapi's platform rate, with model and voice costs on top, and about $84 at Bland's all-inclusive rate.
- Launching with branding showing. tawk.to charges for removing its branding, and Chatling's no-branding option arrives on Plus. Decide on this before customers see the widget.
When it is worth paying
You have outgrown a free plan when the limit shapes how you serve customers. Turning the bot off to save credits, asking a colleague to share a login, or letting messages wait for the new month are all signs.
| If you are | Upgrade to | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| A fourth person joining support | Zoho Express | Email ticketing and basic automation for small teams |
| Growing past five people | Help Scout Standard | Up to 25 users, 20 inboxes, unlimited contacts and an AI Inbox assistant |
| A store past 1,000 visitors | Ochatbot Starter | 2,000 visitors, 3,000 products and a year of data storage |
| Running out of bot credits | Chatbase Hobby | 700 message credits a month and 2 members |
| Needing an unbranded widget | Chatling Plus | No branding, CSAT survey and daily auto-sync |
| Wanting the bot to resolve questions | Help Scout AI Answers | $0.75 per resolution, so 200 resolutions cost $150 a month |
Billing changes the picture. Zoho takes 34% off for yearly billing, Chatbase and Botpress 20%, and Tidio and Wonderchat 17%. Zoho's trial runs 15 days with no card, Wonderchat's runs 7 days, and Help Scout, Tidio, Crisp and Ochatbot also list trials.
Using two free tools together
Because each tool covers a different job, two free ones can run a small support desk.
- Answer. Put a trained bot on your site with Chatbase or Chatling to take the repeat questions.
- Escalate. Send what the bot cannot answer to a free inbox such as Zoho, Help Scout or tawk.to.
- Review. Read the escalated tickets weekly and add the missing answers to the bot's training content.
A second pairing suits stores. Use Ochatbot for order status and abandoned cart prompts on the site, and tawk.to for the questions that need a person.

How we picked
Every tool here is ranked by its score, and each score is worked out from the vendor’s own published pages: pricing, plans, features and terms. No score is adjusted by hand. All 14 tools have enough published facts to be scored, and on average 89% of each score comes from facts the vendor publishes. The facts behind these scores were checked between 13 September 2026 and 26 September 2026.
Scores compare tools that do the same job, which is why the list is grouped by job: a video editor and a grammar checker are never ranked against each other.

Common questions
Is there a free AI customer support chatbot with no credit card?
Yes. Chatling, DocsBot and Tidio start without a card, and Bland asks for none on its Start plan. Chatling gives live chat plus a bot trained on your own knowledge base, while DocsBot gives one bot with 50 source pages. Tidio centers on live chat with its Lyro agent, so it suits a team that wants handover to people.
Is there a free AI customer service agent that resolves tickets on its own?
Partly. Wonderchat's free Support Agent covers about 10 resolutions a month, Botpress gives 100 conversations, and Chatbase gives one agent with 50 message credits. Help Scout's autonomous AI Answers is a paid add-on billed per resolution, with three free months. Treat all of these as a trial of a real agent, not a month of cover.
Can a free AI chatbot hand a chat over to a person?
Several can. Ochatbot hands over to human agents, Chatling includes live chat, and Tidio passes anything outside its training to a human. Chatbase puts a helpdesk on its Standard plan for AI and human collaboration, and Dante-ai lists human handover on Pro. For a plain handover from day one, a live chat tool such as tawk.to is the safer base.
Which free plan suits a one-person business?
Pick by what you have to answer. Chatling gives one seat and a large knowledge base, DocsBot one user and a bot trained on your documents, and Chatbase one member. If customers email and chat all day and you are the only agent, tawk.to or Zoho gives you an inbox first and AI later, which is the order most one-person teams need.
Do free AI chatbots work with Shopify?
Ochatbot is built around product feeds, order status and abandoned cart messages, so it is the closest fit. Tawk.to and Crisp list a Shopify integration, which suits a chat widget on a store more than a bot trained on your catalog. Wonderchat, Botpress and Chatbase are better when your questions come from help articles, not product data.
What happens to my bot when the free credits run out?
It depends on the tool. Botpress has no top-ups or overages on its free plan, so the bot stops at 100 conversations. Chatbase and DocsBot count credits each month, so they restart on the next cycle. Crisp lets you switch on pay-as-you-go to keep its AI running, and Vapi bills by the minute once its sign-up minutes are spent.
Which free tools reach WhatsApp?
Wonderchat, Chatbase, Botpress, Dante-ai and Tidio all list WhatsApp, and tawk.to's inbox collects WhatsApp messages next to chat, email and SMS. Help Scout includes WhatsApp from Standard upward, so the free plan is not where it starts. DocsBot is the one to avoid for messaging apps, because it has no WhatsApp channel.
