Zoho is the cheapest route here to a proper ticketing desk with room to grow: a free three-agent plan, then Express from $9, with 34 percent off on annual billing and a 15-day trial that needs no card.
Best AI Customer Service Tools Under $30/mo
Find the best AI customer service tools under $30 a month and see how far that budget stretches: a seat or two on a helpdesk, a metered AI agent, a voice line or a website bot. Each section explains what the price counts, and each entry names the point where a real team's month costs more than the sticker suggests.
Our top 3 AI Customer Service Tools Under $30/mo
The unit price is $0.99 an outcome, but a minimum of 50 outcomes a month means a month costs at least $49.50, so budget above $30 from day one.
Retell bills $0.07 to $0.31 a minute with no monthly fee, so $30 buys roughly 100 to 430 minutes of calls, depending on where in that range you land.
Best AI helpdesks under $30
7 picksAt this budget a helpdesk is priced per person or per ticket. Zendesk Support Team and Help Scout Standard charge per agent, Gorgias and Tidio count tickets or conversations, while Zoho and tawk.to cost little or nothing for a small crew. Zendesk keeps its AI Agents for the Suite plan above. Pick Gorgias for Shopify, Freshworks for IT-style requests, Help Scout for a shared inbox.

Express: For small teams, includes email ticketing and basic automation

Zoho is the cheapest route here to a proper ticketing desk with room to grow: a free three-agent plan, then Express from $9, with 34 percent off on annual billing and a 15-day trial that needs no card. Budget for Professional if you want Zia AI, live chat and telephony, since those start there. Choose Zoho over Zendesk when you want CRM next door and no per-agent jump to an AI tier.
- Zoho Desk offers mature, full-featured SLA management with configurable routing and escalation logic.
- The platform covers an exceptionally wide surface area with 55+ apps, making it viable as an all-in-one replacement for multiple point solutions.
- Zia AI agent performance depends heavily on training investment, meaning out-of-the-box autonomous agents may underperform without significant configuration effort.

Support Team: Core support essentials: email, ticketing, routing, analytics dashboards

Support Team is $25 per agent a month for email, ticketing, routing and analytics dashboards, with a 14-day trial and no free plan. AI Agents and omnichannel messaging start on Suite Team at $69, so at this budget Zendesk is a ticketing tool with AI one tier away. Three agents cost $75 here and $207 one tier up. Choose it over Help Scout if phone, social and WhatsApp are coming.
- Zendesk's ticketing system is highly mature, having been refined over nearly 20 years with solid routing, triggers, automations, and skills-based assignment.
- The AI Resolution Learning Loop improves agent performance over time by feeding every resolved interaction back into the system.
- The platform has grown so large and complex that summarizing its value proposition is difficult, which can make onboarding and decision-making harder for new buyers.

Starter: Incident management, knowledge management, task management, support portal; 14-day free trial

Freshworks leans toward IT-style requests more than shop chat: Starter covers incident, knowledge and task management with a support portal, and Growth adds SLA management and a service catalog. Freddy AI Copilot is listed from Pro, so the AI sits above this budget. Freshchat handles web, mobile, WhatsApp and Messenger conversations. Pick it over Zendesk when your tickets come from staff rather than customers.
- Freshworks offers a genuinely free Freshdesk plan with unlimited agents and no time limit, which is rare at this scale.
- The platform covers customer support, sales, CRM, marketing automation, and IT operations under one ecosystem, reducing vendor sprawl.
- The platform is a family of separate products rather than one unified tool, which can add complexity for teams wanting a simple solution.

Standard is billed per user, with up to 25 users and 20 inboxes, unlimited contacts, basic workflows, one SLA policy, an AI Inbox assistant and WhatsApp. A team of four pays $120 a month. AI Answers is separate at $0.75 a resolution, so 300 resolved questions add $225. Pick it over Zendesk when you want AI help inside a plain shared inbox, not a larger suite.
- The shared inbox is mature and feature-rich, including assignment, tagging, SLAs, snooze, saved replies, and workflow automation that requires no developer involvement.
- AI features are genuinely integrated rather than bolted on, with AI Answers acting as an autonomous agent inside Beacon and inbox AI handling drafting, editing, and translating.
- Help Scout is not designed for enterprise teams or solo operators, leaving those outside the small-to-mid-sized sweet spot underserved.

Starter: ~50 tickets/mo helpdesk base; AI Agent add-on pay-per-resolution; unlimited agents

Starter at $10 gives about 50 tickets a month and unlimited agents, and adding the AI Agent makes it $40, with resolutions billed per resolution. Basic, at about 300 tickets, is $60 without AI and $90 with it, and a store handling a few hundred tickets will land there. Choose Gorgias over Tidio when Shopify is your storefront and pre-sale chat, upsells and order help belong in one helpdesk.
- Native one-click Shopify integration pulls order data, customer history, and product catalog directly into the conversation view.
- Agents can issue refunds, apply discounts, cancel orders, and initiate upsells without leaving the ticket interface.
- For non-Shopify ecommerce brands, the value proposition becomes significantly more complicated and less compelling.

Growth begins at 250 billable conversations and adds advanced analytics and automation. Conversations are counted on two meters, so budget the Lyro allowance separately. Pick Tidio over Gorgias for live chat and proactive flows on a general website, not a Shopify store.
- Lyro AI agent performs better than expected, handling repetitive queries like order status, return policies, and FAQs without human intervention.
- Available across web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and Chrome, giving small teams the flexibility to run support on the go.
- Pricing structure is likely to frustrate buyers who don't fit the specific use case Tidio is optimized for.

- The core platform is genuinely free with unlimited agents and full chat history included at no cost.
- tawk.to holds over 20% market share in its category, suggesting strong reliability and widespread adoption since 2013.
- Removing tawk.to branding from the chat widget requires an additional paid add-on, which undermines the fully-free positioning for many businesses.

Best AI voice agents under $30
2 picksVoice platforms bill by the minute, so the budget is a call volume, not a plan. Basic jumps to $97, far past this budget, so a rise in traffic is the decision point. Pick Ochatbot over Chatling when a Shopify catalog is your knowledge and order status is the question customers ask most.

How to choose an AI customer service tool under $30 a month
A $30 ceiling means very different things across this page. For a helpdesk billed per agent it buys one person, for a ticket-based AI agent it buys a few dozen resolved tickets, and for a voice platform it buys a few hours of calls. The tools also split on where AI lives: some include it in the plan, some sell it as an add-on, and some sit above the budget until you add it. This guide turns each pricing model into a real monthly bill, then matches the tools to the kind of team you run.
Start with the job, not the tool
The fourteen tools here do five jobs. The pricing model follows the job, so naming yours first saves a lot of arithmetic.
- Running a shared inbox. Several people answer the same customers. Zoho, Zendesk, Freshworks, Help Scout, Tidio and tawk.to are built around tickets and conversations, and Gorgias adds Shopify order data to the same view.
- Resolving tickets with AI. A bot answers and closes tickets without a person. Fin, eesel AI and CoSupport AI take this on, and each bills by outcome, ticket or reply.
- Answering from your own documents. A chatbot reads your help pages and replies. Chatling trains on a synced website, uploaded files or a connected help center and hands over to a person with a summary.
- Supporting a store. Orders, refunds and product questions lead. Gorgias is built into Shopify, and Ochatbot handles order status and abandoned carts for Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce stores.
- Answering calls. A voice agent takes the phone. Retellai and Bland charge for every minute on a call.
Find your job in the table, then read the catch with the alternative.
| Job | Start with | Runner-up and the trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Inbox for two or three agents | Zoho | Zendesk is a more mature ticketing system, but its AI Agents begin on the $69 Suite Team plan |
| Inbox for a team of five or more | Help Scout | tawk.to costs nothing per agent, though branding removal is an add-on |
| Shopify store with real order traffic | Gorgias | Ochatbot costs less, yet its ticket handling is a form with email alerts |
| AI that resolves tickets | eesel AI | CoSupport AI bills only resolved tickets, from $0.19 each |
| Chatbot from your help pages | Chatling | Fin charges $0.99 an outcome and expects 50 outcomes every month |
| Phone support | Retellai | Bland folds model, transcription and voice into $0.14 a minute |
What the price actually buys
Here is each pricing model turned into a plain monthly bill, because the unit price alone misleads.
- Per agent. Zendesk Support Team is $25 per agent, so 3 agents cost $75 a month, and Suite Team with AI Agents at $69 per agent costs $207 for the same three. Help Scout Standard is $30 per user, which makes 3 users $90. Zoho Express starts at $9 a month, with its free plan stretching to 3 agents.
- Per ticket allowance. Gorgias charges for volume with unlimited agents: $10 for about 50 tickets, $60 for about 300. Adding its AI Agent lifts those to $40 and $90, with each resolution billed on top. Tidio Starter is $29 for 100 billable conversations and 50 Lyro AI conversations, a one-off allowance.
- Per outcome. Fin bills $0.99 for each outcome and requires 50 a month, so the floor is $49.50. eesel AI charges $0.40 per ticket, so $30 buys 75 tickets. CoSupport AI charges from $0.19 per resolved ticket, so 150 resolved tickets cost $28.50, and unresolved ones are free.
- Per resolution add-on. Help Scout's AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution, so 40 resolutions add $30. It comes with a 3 month free trial.
- Per minute. Retellai runs $0.07 to $0.31 a minute, so $28 buys at least 400 minutes. Bland at $0.14 gives 200 minutes for $28.
- Per visitor. Ochatbot Starter is $9 for 2,000 monthly visitors and 3,000 products.
Which tool fits which team
- Solo store owners. Start with Ochatbot Starter, or its free plan if traffic is under 1,000 visitors. Move to Gorgias once orders produce tickets that need refunds or cancellations.
- Two or three person teams. Start with Zoho, which gives 3 agents free and lets you try paid features during a 15 day trial. Add eesel AI if the same few questions keep arriving.
- Teams of five who share an inbox. Start with Help Scout, whose free plan takes 5 users and whose Standard plan takes up to 25. WhatsApp arrives with Standard.
- Teams that already pay for a helpdesk. Start with Fin, which plugs into Salesforce, HubSpot and Freshdesk and can be live within the hour. If you use Intercom's helpdesk, expect $19 per seat on top.
- Teams that want a free start with room to grow. Start with Freshworks, whose Freshdesk plan is free for unlimited agents, with Freddy AI trainable on your data at higher tiers. It is listed for IT teams, so it suits desks inside a company best.
- Mid-sized support desks. Start with Zendesk Support Team for mature ticketing, routing and analytics, and plan for the Suite price once you want its AI Agents.
- Developers adding a phone line. Start with Retellai, which opens with $10 of credit and 20 concurrent calls at no charge. It runs on GPT, Claude and Gemini models.
Where the entry plans stop
| Limit | Tools | What happens when you hit it |
|---|---|---|
| Tickets per month | Gorgias (about 50 Starter, about 300 Basic) | The next plan up raises the allowance |
| Conversations | Tidio (100 billable, 50 Lyro one-off) | Growth starts at 250 billable conversations |
| Monthly minimum | Fin (50 outcomes) | The bill is $49.50 even in a quiet month |
| Credit that runs out | eesel AI ($50), Retellai ($10) | eesel agents pause, and Retellai starts charging per minute |
| AI placement | Zendesk (from Suite Team), Help Scout (AI Answers add-on) | AI costs extra on top of the entry plan |
| Visitors | Ochatbot (2,000 on Starter) | Basic at $97 takes 10,000 |
Measure before you buy. Count the tickets you handle in a normal month, estimate what share a bot could close, and price each model with those numbers. At 100 tickets a month, eesel AI handles all of them for $40, while CoSupport AI at a 60% resolution rate bills 60 resolved tickets for $11.40. At 20 hours of calls, Retellai costs at least $84 and Bland $168.
What the cheapest plan leaves out
Entry plans leave out AI, channels and controls in different places. Zendesk Support Team has email, ticketing, routing and analytics, while AI Agents, the knowledge base, Action Builder, messaging and telephony start on Suite Team. Zoho Express leaves multi-channel support and SLA management for Standard and live chat and Zia AI for Professional. Gorgias Starter leaves advanced automation and revenue reporting for Pro.
For smaller tools, tawk.Fin prices analytics as a separate Pro add-on, $99 for each 1,000 conversations, and sells its agent assistant, Copilot, at $35 per user.
Privacy and who sees your conversations
Support threads hold names, addresses and order details, so check what a vendor says about training before you connect a bot. These tools state that your data stays out of training, and one offers an opt-out.
| Tool | What is stated |
|---|---|
| Chatling | Not used for training |
| CoSupport AI | Not used for training; ISO 27001 certified |
| eesel AI | Not used for training |
| Help Scout | Not used for training; SOC 2 certified |
| Ochatbot | Not used for training |
| Zoho | Not used for training; also lists SOC 2 and ISO 27001 |
| Fin | Training opt-out; also lists SOC 2 and ISO 27001 |
Choose from this list when you keep customer details, and turn training off in Fin on day one.
Mistakes to avoid
- Pricing Zendesk by the $25 headline. Support Team has no AI Agents, which begin on Suite Team at $69 per agent. If AI is the reason you are buying, start the math there.
- Treating Fin's unit price as the bill. At $0.99 per outcome with a 50 outcome minimum, a quiet month still costs $49.50, and an Intercom helpdesk adds $19 per seat.
- Counting Help Scout's AI Answers as included. It is an add-on at $0.75 per resolution, so a busy month with 200 resolutions adds $150.
- Running through eesel AI's credit unaware. The $50 covers 125 tickets at $0.40, and then the agents pause. Watch the count in the first week.
- Buying Gorgias for a non-Shopify store. Its value comes from the Shopify integration, and for other platforms the case is much weaker. Choose Zoho, Help Scout or Tidio instead.
When to move up a plan
You should pay more when your plan limit decides what you answer. Skipping the bot on hard tickets, queueing chats until the allowance resets, or sharing one agent login are the signs.
| If you are | Upgrade to | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Past 50 tickets a month | Gorgias Basic | About 300 tickets, or $90 with the AI Agent |
| Past 2,000 store visitors | Ochatbot Basic | room for 10,000 visitors, plus a product finder and manual upsell prompts |
| Needing AI inside the helpdesk | Zendesk Suite Team | AI Agents, knowledge base, Action Builder and messaging |
| Adding people to the inbox | Help Scout Standard | Up to 25 users, 20 inboxes and unlimited contacts |
| Resolving tickets in steady volume | CoSupport AI server plan | Unlimited AI responses at a flat fee from $99 |
| Taking many calls | Bland Build | $0.12 a minute plus a $299 monthly platform fee |
Billing changes the math. Zoho takes 34% off for yearly billing, eesel AI 25%, and Zendesk and Freshworks 20%. Zendesk offers a 14 day trial with no card, Zoho 15 days, and CoSupport AI a 30 day pilot with 1,000 free responses and a 60 day refund promise linked to hitting a 60% resolution rate.
Using two tools together
A pair of cheap tools usually beats one expensive suite.
- Capture. Keep customers in one inbox, such as Zoho, Help Scout or free Freshdesk.
- Deflect. Put eesel AI or Chatling in front to take the repeat questions at a unit price you can predict.
- Tune. Read the tickets the bot passed on and feed the answers back into its sources each week.
For a Shopify store, run Gorgias for refunds and cancellations and Ochatbot for order status and cart prompts on the site.

How we picked
Every tool here is ranked by its score, and each score is worked out from the vendor’s own published pages: pricing, plans, features and terms. No score is adjusted by hand. All 14 tools have enough published facts to be scored, and on average 92% of each score comes from facts the vendor publishes. The facts behind these scores were checked between 13 September 2026 and 26 September 2026.
Scores compare tools that do the same job, which is why the list is grouped by job: a video editor and a grammar checker are never ranked against each other.
