Sonix converts recordings into transcripts, translations and subtitles in the browser, with a paid AI layer for summaries and chapters. There's no ongoing free plan, so whether it suits you turns on how many hours you transcribe each month and whether you need HIPAA-eligible handling through its separate Medical product.

What is Sonix?

Sonix is a US company. It's a cloud transcription platform: audio or video you upload is processed on Sonix's servers, not on your own device. It runs in the browser, plus a REST API that lets you upload files, retrieve transcripts and manage your account programmatically.

What you get from a recording

Sonix transcribes in 54+ languages and translates a transcript into any of the same 54+ languages. It automatically detects and labels different speakers in a recording. The in-browser editor keeps text synced to the audio: click a word to jump playback to that moment, and edits keep the timestamps in place.

Its AI Analysis feature adds automatic chapter creation with timestamps, along with summaries, sentiment, topics and named entities. Transcripts export as SRT, VTT, DOCX, PDF or TXT, or as burnt-in captions on an exported MP4. Recordings are uploaded or imported after the fact rather than captured live, and there's no short-clip cutting tool.

Working with other people

Sonix offers granular team permissions and read-only sharing, plus comments, assignments and real-time editing for a team working on the same transcript. It imports recordings from Zoom and Microsoft Teams, and syncs to Dropbox and Google Drive; Zapier connects it to other workflows. Exports go to Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro X, Avid Media Composer and DaVinci Resolve for editors, and to NVivo, ATLAS.ti and MAXQDA for researchers, alongside Box and Salesforce. SSO integration with major identity providers is available on Enterprise accounts.

Sonix pricing: what each plan gives

There's no free plan, only a 30-minute usage trial with no card required. Pay As You Go charges $10 an hour with no subscription. Core costs $25 a month, or $22.92 a month billed annually, and includes one seat, 5 hours a month of transcription and translation, 5 hours a month of AI workspace usage and 25GB of storage; an extra seat costs $25 a month.

Advanced costs $50 a month, or $45.83 a month billed annually, and Pro costs $80 a month, or $73.33 a month billed annually, each stepping up the included hours and storage. A custom-quoted Enterprise tier sits above Pro.

Privacy and support

None of the data processed through Sonix is used for training: "we never sell, share, or train on your data." It's SOC 2 certified and GDPR compliant, and can sign a DPA and SCC. Support runs through a help center, in-app chat and email; phone support with priority response is reserved for Business and Enterprise plans.

A separate product, Medical Sonix, is HIPAA compliant, signs Business Associate Agreements and puts safeguards in place to protect PHI for healthcare organizations; it has its own pricing page.

Who Sonix suits

Sonix suits individuals and teams with steady, ongoing transcription and translation needs who want a text-synced editor, automatic speaker labels and AI summaries in one subscription. Its links into Zoom, Teams, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve suit video and podcast production, and its NVivo, ATLAS.ti and MAXQDA exports suit qualitative research work.

It suits less well anyone who wants to try the full product without a subscription, since there's no ongoing free tier, and anyone who needs a mobile or desktop app, since Sonix runs in the browser only. Occasional, low-volume work may sit better on the hourly Pay As You Go rate than a monthly plan.
