Some AI tools use the prompts, files and outputs you give them to improve their models. Others promise never to. Many sit in between: they train on your data unless you find the setting and switch it off. Those three answers are very different, and a vendor's marketing rarely makes the difference clear.
02Why it matters when you are choosing
Anything used for training can end up shaping answers other people get. For client work, contracts, code or anything under an NDA, a tool that trains on your data by default can put you in breach without anyone noticing.
03What to check
Read the privacy policy or data use page, not the homepage. Look for the default: does it train unless you opt out, or never? Check whether the answer changes between the free plan and paid business plans, because it often does.
04The tools
136 of the 229 tools we checked say they do not train on your data. Each one is checked against the vendor's own pages. A tool missing from this list may not have been checked yet, which is not the same as a no.
