Figma is a browser-based interface design tool built around a shared canvas that several people can edit at once, with AI features layered on for generating screens and images. Whether it fits depends on whether you're doing structured interface and prototyping work with a team, since its editing tools assume familiarity with components and layers rather than a drag-and-drop starting point.
What is Figma?
Figma is a United States company based in San Francisco. It runs primarily in the browser, with native desktop apps for Windows and Mac and mobile apps for iOS and Android, and a REST API is published for teams that want to pull Figma data into other systems.
Figma's own AI features sit inside the existing editor rather than as a separate product. For image, video, audio and 3D generation, Figma Weave brings in models from Google, Kling, Runway and Luma, among others it does not name individually.
Designing screens in Figma
Figma Make turns a written prompt into a working app or web screen, generating code behind the design as it goes. It accepts attached images, videos, audio, text files and PDFs as extra context for a prompt, though a plain screenshot is not itself converted into an editable Figma design inside Figma itself.
Interactive prototypes can be built and shared by link, and comments attach directly to a prototype or file for feedback. Team libraries hold shared design systems, and Organization and Enterprise plans extend that further with multi-brand design systems that scale across several products or client brands at once.
Dev Mode is the handoff layer: it measures the distance between objects and generates code snippets in CSS, iOS and Android for a developer to copy without needing a Full seat. Figma does not offer its own built-in user testing; that is left to a separate Sprig integration instead.
Working with other people
Multiplayer editing lets more than one person work inside the same file live, and comments can be left directly on a file or a prototype. Team libraries hold shared assets, colours, type styles and components across a team, extending into organisation-wide and multi-brand design systems on the higher plans.
Single sign-on with SAML, plus SCIM provisioning, is available on Organization and Enterprise. Figma connects to Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace, Notion, Jira, Confluence, Asana, Linear, Superhuman and ChatGPT, among other tools, and runs on web, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. The editor, desktop app and mobile apps are currently supported in English, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.
Figma pricing: what each plan gives
Starter is free and includes unlimited drafts plus UI kits and templates, with 150 AI credits a day up to 500 a month. Starter exports carry no watermark, and Figma does not publish a separate time-limited trial of its paid plans: the free Starter plan is offered instead of one.
Professional has three seat types. A Full seat is $20 a month, or $16 a month billed yearly, and comes with 3,000 AI credits a month. A Dev seat, for developers who mainly need Dev Mode, is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly. A Collab seat, for people who only need to view and comment, is $5 a month, or $3 a month billed yearly.
Organization and Enterprise are billed yearly only, with no published monthly option. Organization's Full seat is $55 a month with 3,500 AI credits a month, its Dev seat is $25 a month, and its Collab seat is $5 a month. Enterprise's Full seat is $90 a month with 4,250 AI credits a month, its Dev seat is $35 a month, and its Collab seat is $5 a month.
Privacy and support
Content training defaults to on for Starter and Professional accounts, though an admin can opt out; it defaults to off for Organization and Enterprise. Figma holds a SOC 2 Type 2 report and states it follows the EU Cloud Code of Conduct in support of GDPR. Single sign-on comes with Organization and Enterprise.
Support runs through a help center and a ticketed contact-support request form, plus a community forum for peer discussion.
Who Figma suits
Figma suits teams building digital products who need several people editing the same file at once, interactive prototypes to share by link, and a direct handoff to developers through Dev Mode's measurements and code snippets. Organisations running more than one brand get further value from multi-brand design systems and Organization or Enterprise-level single sign-on.
It suits less well anyone who wants to turn a screenshot into an editable design inside the tool, or who needs built-in user testing, since Figma leaves that to a Sprig integration instead.
