ChatGPT adds Space and Pages, with Slides to follow

For most of its life, ChatGPT has been a chat window that teams used next to their real productivity tools. At its DevDay conference on 29 September 2026, OpenAI announced Space, Pages, collaborative Slides, plugin extensions and a "Sign in with ChatGPT" option that lets users bring their AI allowance into third-party apps. Together, these features make ChatGPT look much more like a place to do work than a chatbot.

TechCrunch describes OpenAI, a close Microsoft partner from the start, as increasingly going after Microsoft's bread and butter, workplace software, while Microsoft and Salesforce try to become more like OpenAI. ZDNET notes that Sam Altman did not frame the launch as a Workspace competitor, and an OpenAI representative described the pieces as a way to bring developing ideas, sharing them and collecting feedback into one place.

What Space, Pages and Slides do

Space is a shared workspace where team members, ChatGPT and each person's Dot, OpenAI's new AI agent persona, work together. Files, chats and projects live in one place, and ChatGPT keeps the Space organised based on how users tell it to sort things. Altman said pages and files live together "like they would in a drive," but that spaces feel alive: a page can be told to check a team channel and update itself with what it finds. Space is available now for Pro, Business and Enterprise plans on the desktop app and the web. A mobile version is coming later.

Pages is OpenAI's document format, described by the company as "a new type of document, built for human and agent collaboration." Users can write, research, generate charts, create images and invite teammates to edit. It is available now. Collaborative Slides lets multiple people and agents work on a deck at the same time, start from a conversation or a template, leave comments, and export to PowerPoint or Google Slides. It is not available yet. An OpenAI representative said it will roll out in the coming weeks.

Plugin extensions and the wider platform

Plugin extensions give apps a dedicated home in the ChatGPT sidebar. Developers can build interactive panels so users can work with their tools while chatting, and file viewers for the formats their products use. In demos, OpenAI showed design apps from Figma and Adobe working this way. A new Plugin Creator helps developers build, and a redesigned submission flow gives clearer feedback and lets developers update a plugin's tools without restarting the whole submission. Plugin extensions are available on every ChatGPT plan, and users approve each plugin's access.

ChatGPT is also now available in Slack and Microsoft Teams through an @ChatGPT mention, without each team member needing their own ChatGPT license. A Meetings Plugin creates notes, summaries and action items in Space, with audio deleted after the summary is generated, but it launches in beta on macOS for Pro and Business users only. OpenAI is also adding support for the proposed MCP Events specification, which lets plugins start automations when something happens in a connected app. For Enterprise customers there is a new OpenAI Marketplace with 32 launch partners, including Adobe, Figma, Salesforce and ServiceNow, where companies can redirect part of their existing OpenAI spend toward approved partner software.

Plans, pricing and enterprise data controls

OpenAI is also reshuffling pricing. A new Pro 500 plan offers the highest usage quota, and the $200 Pro plan returns with a smaller API budget than before. With "Sign in with ChatGPT," Plus and Pro users can spend their quota at 16 partner services, including Cognition's Devin, Notion, Vercel, T3, OpenClaw and Dactyl, and that usage counts against their plan limits. TechCrunch points out that OpenAI did not announce a billing or revenue-sharing system comparable to a traditional app store, and has not said these features remove the need for separate third-party subscriptions.

For enterprise data, OpenAI announced Private Intelligence, a data access approval layer, including Zero Data Retention with Private Safety Processing, which allows automated safety reviews without giving OpenAI staff access to the underlying content. A preview of Private Inference, which combines confidential computing with verifiable controls, is due this fall. ZDNET says OpenAI did not explain the difference between the two in any detail.

What a team weighing this should check

The gaps are visible in the announcements themselves. Slides has not shipped, Space is not on mobile yet, and the Meetings Plugin is a macOS beta. OpenAI also tried a collaboration feature before: it shut down shared chats between multiple users and the AI in July, saying it wanted to keep ChatGPT simpler. ZDNET describes OpenAI's path toward a productivity suite as meandering, and notes that Anthropic has made a similar consolidation with Claude Docs inside Claude.

The counterweight is scale and distribution. OpenAI says ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users, and "Sign in with ChatGPT" plus the plugin platform are aimed at making ChatGPT the place where software is discovered.
