The verdict

Worth paying for if you want to launch a hosted app from a prompt without a developer; the catch is metered message credits and GitHub sync starting at Builder.

Pros

  • The backend, a database, authentication and hosting are built in, with a built-in database on every plan including Free.
  • The Free plan gives 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month and up to 5 apps.
  • GitHub integration is a two-way sync on Builder and above, and the CLI can clone an app into a local project.
  • Apps can be packaged and submitted to the Apple App Store and Google Play, and Stripe payments can be set up from the AI chat.

Cons

  • Plans run on message credits, and Starter holds 100 message credits a month.
  • There is no free trial of the paid plans, and a custom domain needs Starter or above.
  • HIPAA compliance and a BAA are not offered, and the workspace-level training opt-out is an Enterprise feature.

How the Spec Score works

Scored from what Base44 publishes on its own site. Not a hands-on test.

Compared with 5 AI app builders. Facts checked 14 Oct 2026.

A fact the vendor does not publish gets half the points, or the typical value for a number, and says so. It never counts as a no. How we score.

Base44 is an AI app builder that turns a prompt into a working app or website, with the backend, database, login and hosting built in. It is run by Wix. What decides whether it suits you is how many message credits you need each month, since every plan is priced by credits.

What is Base44?

Base44 is a hosted commercial platform owned by Wix. You build in the web app, and there are also iOS and Android apps and a Mac app. The platform is not open source and apps run on Base44's managed backend, with no self-hosted option.

Building an app with Base44

You describe what you want in the AI chat, and Base44 builds a full-stack app: front end, backend, database and login. A visual editor lets you adjust the result, and you can turn Figma designs into working apps and pages. You can add collaborators to work with you in the app editor to design, configure and maintain the app.

Hosting is included. Apps are hosted by Base44 on every plan, and the Free plan is limited to 5 apps. A built-in database is on every plan including Free, and authentication is built in. Your app's users can sign in with Google Workspace, Microsoft, GitHub, Okta or another OIDC provider.

For payments, you can set up Stripe in your app from the AI chat: install Stripe, create products and test checkout. Wix payments are also documented. A custom domain is on Starter and above, with a free domain for a year on yearly plans.

GitHub integration is two-way sync and comes with the Builder plan and above, and the CLI can also clone an app into a local project. Base44 has a public SDK and CLI for its backend, plus an API page for each app.

For mobile, apps can be added to a phone home screen, or packaged and submitted to the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Working with other people

Plans are priced per workspace, and collaborators can work with you in the app editor. Enterprise adds custom credits, a dedicated architect and SSO. Support is through support tickets and a community. A public SDK and CLI for the Base44 backend are available, and each app also has its own API page. Wix payments are documented alongside Stripe.

Base44 pricing: what each plan gives

Base44 pricing screenshot
Base44, Pricing

Base44 plans run on two kinds of credit: message credits and integration credits. Each paid plan names its own monthly amount of both, and the higher plans carry more. Yearly billing is 20% lower than monthly. There is no trial of the paid plans.

The Free plan gives 25 message credits and 100 integration credits per month, with up to 5 apps, authentication, database functionality and analytics. There is no daily allowance. Starter costs $20 a month, or $16 a month billed annually, and gives 100 message credits and 2,000 integration credits.

Builder costs $50 a month, or $40 a month billed annually, with 250 message credits and 10,000 integration credits. Pro costs $100 a month, or $80 a month billed annually, with 500 message credits and 20,000 integration credits. Elite costs $200 a month, or $160 a month billed annually, with 1,200 message credits and 50,000 integration credits. Enterprise has custom credits.

Privacy and security

Base44 holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, and it follows GDPR data protection standards, with a Data Processing Agreement available on request. HIPAA compliance and a BAA are not offered.

Enterprise includes a workspace-level training opt-out, so you control whether your data trains AI models there.

Who Base44 suits

Base44 suits non-developers and small teams who want to build and host a working app or website from a prompt. Everything an app needs, from the database and login to hosting and Stripe payments, is already in the product, and the Free plan lets you build up to 5 apps to try it.

It suits less well people who need HIPAA, since the platform does not offer it, and anyone who builds a lot, because credits are metered and the Starter plan holds 100 message credits a month. GitHub sync needs Builder or above, and the platform itself is hosted by Base44, not self-hosted.
