Agentic AI

AI that can plan steps and take actions on its own toward a goal, rather than only answering one prompt at a time.

01In plain English

Agentic AI describes systems that are given a goal and then decide the steps themselves. They can search, call other software, check their own work and try again. A chatbot answers one message at a time, while an agentic system keeps working until the task is done or it needs your input.

02How it works

An agentic system runs in a loop. You state a goal, and the AI makes a plan with several steps. It carries out the first step by using a tool, such as searching the web, reading a file or sending a message through another program. It then looks at what happened, checks whether it is closer to the goal, and decides on the next step, changing the plan if something went wrong. The loop stops when the goal is met, a limit is reached or it needs a decision from you. Instead of replying once to a single prompt, the AI acts for several minutes or longer. It resembles a junior colleague who is handed a project, works through it and checks in only when stuck.

03Why it matters when you are choosing

It promises to automate whole tasks instead of single steps, but each extra action is a chance for an error to repeat or compound. How much you can see and control matters more than how autonomous a tool claims to be.

04What to check

Ask the vendor

Check what actions it is allowed to take, whether it asks for approval before risky ones, and whether you get a log of what it did. Ask how you stop a task that goes wrong.

06Common questions

What is the difference between agentic AI and generative AI?

Generative AI produces content, such as text or images, in response to a prompt. Agentic AI uses that ability to pursue a goal across several steps, taking actions in other tools along the way. An agentic system usually contains a generative model but does more with it.

Is agentic AI safe for business use?

It can be, with limits. Because it takes real actions, mistakes can repeat or spread before you notice. Give it narrow permissions, require approval for risky steps, keep logs and have a way to stop it. Start with low-stakes tasks and widen its scope as it earns trust.

Do I need technical skills to use agentic AI?

Many business products let you describe the task in plain language and connect your accounts without code. Setting the right limits still takes care, and developer frameworks do require programming. Check how much setup and testing a tool expects before you rely on it.
