A vector image describes lines, curves and fills mathematically. A photo, by contrast, is a grid of pixels. Scale a vector logo up to a billboard and it stays crisp, while a pixel image turns blurry. SVG, AI and EPS are common vector formats.
02Why it matters when you are choosing
Logos, icons and anything that goes to print at several sizes belong in vector form. An image editor built for photos is the wrong tool for that job.

Ask the vendor
Check which formats the editor opens and exports, especially SVG, PDF and the AI files clients often send.
